- (6/5/07) I found this story in USA Today:
- People who don’t have enough to eat cost the American public at least
$90 billion a year in charitable donations, reduced productivity and
health care costs, according to a study out today.

We need donations people! Don't make me send out another mass
email. Please consider donating to this very important cause.
- (5/18/07) Hey! We have not moved our dollar figure beyond $120. Please consider donating.
- Many thanks to Dottie and John C. for their $50 donation!
- Wow! There is even a Center on Hunger and Poverty. Who knew? They are part of the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. They have lots of good information. I highly recommend checking them out. Here are some quick facts from the Center:
- In 2001, more than 23 million Americans
sought emergency food assistance from food banks, church
pantries, soup kitchens, meal sites, and shelters. On a
monthly basis, this is 6 million more low-income people
than are enrolled in the Food Stamp Program.
- Between 2001 and 2002, requests for emergency
food assistance increased by an average of 19% in American
cities, with 48% of requests coming from families with children.
- Children make up nearly 40% of all emergency
food clients. Another 20% are elderly Americans. Nearly
40% of all households served by food banks include someone
who is working.
- I found this site: WHEAT (World Hunger Blah). It has some great statistics and news items.
- I put a banner on the front page for the Walk to End Hunger in Children, sponsored by the United Nations World Food Program. Check this event out. It is scheduled for May 13, 2007.
- I have just joined the ONE.com Campaign. This project is an attempt to erase not only hunger, but poverty, worldwide. Check them out.
- Just got another donation! Woo-hoo! Thanks to Dan and Pam G for their $25.
- The United States Post Office is running a program called "Stamp Out Hunger." I will be participating. Will You?
- On
Saturday May 12th, letter carriers in more than 10,000 communities will
collect food items and deliver them to local food banks to help some of
the millions of Americans, including an estimated 13 million children,
who face hunger every day. Since 1993, families have donated
more than a half-billion pounds of food to Stamp Out Hunger™. You can
help make this year our most successful ever.
- Simply
place bags filled with nonperishable food items* like canned meats and
fish, canned soup, juice, pasta, vegetables, cereal and rice next to
your mailbox this Saturday, May 12th. Your letter carrier will pick up
the bags and deliver them to your local food bank.
- I found this National Statistics on
Hunger and Poverty. It has some
interesting facts. Did you know that Oklahoma, South
Carolina, and Arkansas have the highest rates of food insecurity and
hunger? My state, Maryland is 21st (tied with New York).
- Here
is a "Facts About Hunger" sheet I compiled for last year's food drive.
